International Child Helpline Day

May 17 is International Child Helpline Day.

The day is meant to call attention to the invaluable work child helplines around the world provide to help children with the problems they encounter in their daily lives.

The Child Helpline International organization, who recently partnered with OneTribe.com, was founded in 2003 in response to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child. The Helpline is designed on the belief that children and young people have rights, and need to be equipped with the proper tools to identify their problems.

Child Helplines are available through phone calls, text messaging, fax, internet, in person and through postal service.

Child Helpline International works in over 150 countries and received 10.5 million contacts from children and young people in need of crisis intervention, rehabilitation and counseling in 2005.

Global Village of Beijing Strives for Environmental Awareness

Last month, Earth Day helped bring awareness to the issues facing our environment. One Tribe and its partners try to prompt people to think about these issues in their everyday life. One partner that is trying to further this message is Global Village Beijing (GVB).

The state of the environment in China is not merely an environmental problem but an economic one as well. The Chinese government released a report earlier this year that stated that the violations in ecological and environmental pollution has damaged the economy at a rate of 10% of the value of gross output in the country.

Most importantly, human health is also at stake due to pollution. According to a UN report in 2007, each year 700 people die from water and air pollution in China.

So what do you do about it?

Global Village Beijing, which formed in 1996, functions through the cooperation of business, governments and non-profit organizations. Some of its main projects include:
  • the production of television programs about environmental issues
  • organizing media workshops and journalist forums
  • developing green communities
  • hosting public activities on sustainable development and consumption
Why should you care?

Pollution knows no boundaries. Pollution has been proven to lead to climate change, which affects us all. Also, environmental concerns are no longer just for hippies, it's for humanity.

What can I do?

There are many things you can do. You can start with putting the Earth as a priority on other days besides Earth Day. You can also support our efforts to contribute to Global Village Beijing by visiting Onetribe.com. A huge goal of GVB is to raise awareness, so you've contributed by reading this blog. Now spread the word!

PeaceJam Project Respect Highlights Global Call to Action on YouTube

PeaceJam, a foundation that is creating a new generation of young leaders committed to positive change, has created a new YouTube Channel, PeaceJam Project Respect, that highlights videos created by youth during the 2008 Global Call to Action Conference in Los Angeles.

A Global Call
The Global Call to Action is an international movement of young people who have decided to work together to solve the most pressing issues of our time.

In small groups and clubs, in cities and in villages, Global Call to Action groups are tackling important problems facing our planet – and are making a difference.

Over the next ten years PeaceJam, with the support of the Nobel Peace Laureates, aims to engage young people on a massive level, working toward the creation of ONE BILLION acts of service and peace. In order to achieve this, the Global Call to Action movement extends far beyond youth and the PeaceJam Foundation itself – any group of motivated individuals from any organization, age level and walk of life can take part.
